10 Questions With… Version Xcursion

March 6th, 2012

This time around, the legendary Sassa'le from Version Xcursion drops by and answers our questions.

  1. What musical projects have you been working on lately?

I've been solely focused on completing my album System Echo - the second official release from Version Xcursion.

  2. When did you start making music and what made you start?

My first release was a drum & bass track under Cryongenics on Snapt Records in New York.

  3. How would you describe your current sound?

    Future Trip Hop

  4. Who are your biggest influences; musical or otherwise?

Soundsystem culture was on of the biggest influences on me when I was growing up. There was a particular sound being played in the UK that was different to what was happening in Jamaica. The sound was very melodic and introduced me to some of my favourite artists and songs to this date: Johnny Clarke, Johnny Osborne, Michael Prophet, Horace Andy... to name a few. Also, Smith & Mighty fused reggae and electronic music in the late 80s and early 90s. This was a significant time and sound for me. And then, just growing up in Bristol England and learning the ways of life.

  5. What is an average day in your life?

Thinking the world could be a better place.

  6. What are some of your pet peeves?

I need to think about that one

  7. Thinking back to your childhood, what were your first experiences with music? What songs do you remember most as a child?

Growing up in a predominantly Black neighbourhood with a large West Indian community in England, reggae music and sound systems were my first experiences with music and a big part of my social life. A few friends and I were taken on as apprentices in a sound system called Sir Bastian and once we learned the ropes we went on to build our own sound sytem. I also went to a place called the Dugout in Bristol back in the 80s. I was a little young to be involved in everything but that’s were I heard a amalgamation of many sounds being played in one place. There are many songs I remember but both Michael Prophet and the Clash bring me back to those times.

  8. Do you have any other interests or talents that you would like to share?

Football (Soccer), daily politics, good food, oh and I like to workout - good for the body and thinking.

  9. How do you like to relax when you are not making music?

Comfortable chair and lots of tea drinking.

  10. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?

Look out for the New Version Xcursion album System Echo. There is some really great new talent featured on this release. Listen feat. Aay Cee will be the first track to drop on Northern Faction 5.
