Seasons Change

Citizen Sound is once again spreading the word, this time with the single Seasons Change, featuring vocalists Melodic and Jahdan Blakkamoore. The riddim blends the styles of classic reggae and hip-hop together, creating a timeless soundscape behind the vocalists’ story telling. Along with the original and instrumental versions, Seasons Change includes remixes from heavyweight dub producers Earlyworm and Richie Phoe. Seasons Change is Citizen Sound’s third single on Balanced Records, following up the recent release of Wa Do Dub and Trouble singles featuring Ammoye.

Kijigog Nimiwan/Galactic Dancehall Video

Flying Down Thunder and Rise Ashen blend traditional Algonquin chanting with globetrotting dancefloor mixology. On Kijigog Nimiwan, the chant summons the listener to come together into a community. This community is all of Creation. Birds, trees, grasses, all respond to the rhythm and Flying Down Thunder is connected to them, dancing with their spirits and dialoguing with the beauty of the forest. Anishnabe people view us as keepers of the land, and these images are an expression of deep interconnectedness in our natural world, a reminder that Creation is ours to cherish and protect. Originally recorded in December of 1999, Omnidirectional was a mix which aired the evening of New Years Eve 1999 on UMFM for Lil’ Phil’s radio show. As the name implies, it covers a vast swath of musical territory and features 5 tempo changes (can you spot them all)? The tracks were some of Kasm‘s (then Pico) favourite at the time and were recorded with the idea of making a mix which was both timeless and showed the breadth of musical creativity at the time.

With lasers blazing Natty Droid’s mesmerizing and mystical dub will propel you outernationally. Toronto-based future dub artist Earlyworm (or as he is also known – Earlyw~rm) pulls out all the stops when it comes to time travel dub. This isn’t any ordinary dub, this is dub that has traveled across the galaxy and landed on Earlyworm’s Terra Firma laptop. Earlyworm’s aeronautic release Natty Droid was originally released in summer 2011 on Dubmatix’s Renegade Rockers label and is available for the first time on vinyl with Balanced. The EP includes 5 heavy-duty payload tracks that take you on a quest into the extra terrestrial regions of dub space.

Spanning afro, deep house, nu jazz and breaks, the songs roll into a coherent and avant-garde Pow-wow. The style is brand new, it’s the future sound of Canada.

Pursuing retribution within artificial environments, Billy Rockwell and Hitori Tori viciously navigate the dark seedy underside of a synthetic world plagued with horrors of our own creation. This isn’t a piece of computer generated fiction, but a response to our man-made media nightmare.

There have been many nights of inner-space drumming and meditative dancing at Ottawa’s Mercury Lounge. After one of these nights, Rise Ashen and vocalist Seema D. headed over to the studio to jam. There they gave birth to Atma, an ode to inner-space and a call to meditation. This joint studio experience embodied a journey into the dancers consciousness, becoming a quest to reunite with the eternal. Strongly imbued with Asian influences, Atma is a percussive, tribal sounding banger that explores the shedding of ego. This recurring theme in dance, the leaving of our terrestrial bodies and joining into the universal consciousness occurs through rhythm. In Rise Ashen and Seema D.s case, it is the bass drum that maps their path in Atmas moving meditation.
