Sarah Michaelson - Balanced Records

Sarah Michaelson

Sarah Michaelson

Having trained as a soprano in both jazz and classical music, Sarah's voice often leans towards a blend of the two styles, reminiscent of the scats and arias that she began performing over a decade ago. She first recorded with Balanced Records for "About a Year Ago Today," a single from [email protected]’s album Character of the Moment. She soon began working as a lyricist and vocalist with Solidaze on his 2006 album, Pleasure From Precision, which later resulted in their live performance in Cannes, France for MIDEM 2008. Her voice has been remixed by many on the Balanced roster and has appeared on various compilations on the label.

Also one of the leading DJs on the Canadian prairies - under the name Mama Cutsworth - she's known for spinning Reggae remixes of classic Motown tunes, Afrobeat mashed up with swing, or blues samples overtop salsa music, all within a single set. She’s taken that sound across Canada, from the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver to Wicker Park in Chicago, to repeated appearances in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Recently, she's played to tens of thousands at the Canada Day celebrations at the Forks in Winnipeg, as well as at the International Winnipeg Folk Festival.

She also hosts Stylus Radio, a weekly program on CKUW 95.9 FM that’s been giving the people what they want for nearly ten years. Check it out on-line or on-air, every Thursday 14:00-15:00 CST.
